For anyone who enjoys good wine and equally appreciates beautiful furniture, this early 19th-century Regency mahogany wine cooler is a piece worth noticing. Dating to around 1820, it was made for entertaining and remains remarkably suited to that purpose today.
Crafted from richly figured flame Cuban mahogany, the wine cooler has a distinctive sarcophagus-shaped design with panelled sides, reeded corners, and impressive carved lion’s paw feet. The original brass castors are still in place, so despite its substantial appearance, it can be moved around the room with relative ease. Inside, the original removable zinc-lined interior and brass swan-neck handles remain intact. (Anthony Short Fine Art & Antiques Ltd)
This is where period antique furniture can offer something that modern pieces often cannot. It is not simply about owning something old; it is about having an object that was designed with a particular purpose and still has the character to fulfil it.
The cooler can certainly be put to use. During a dinner party, it could hold bottles of wine or champagne, allowing guests to help themselves while keeping the drinks conveniently close to the dining table. Its generous proportions also make it useful when entertaining larger groups. The original lining adds to its authenticity and makes the piece particularly interesting for a wine enthusiast.
And when it is not being used for wine, there is no reason for it to sit forgotten in a corner. The substantial shape and sculptural lion’s paw feet make it an attractive feature for a dining room, drawing room, or library. It could be used for plants, offering another practical way to incorporate it into a home.
For a connoisseur of wine, it is a chance to cool and serve bottles in style. For a lover of antiques, it is a striking example of Regency craftsmanship. Either way, this is period antique furniture that was made to be seen, used, and enjoyed.
