A Mid 19th-Century Victorian Period Burr Walnut and Marquetyry Canterbury, or Magazine Rack

A stunning and exceptionally fine quality mid 19th-century Victorian period burr walnut and marquetry Canterbury, or magazine rack, dating to circa 1850. Beautifully constructed from richly figured burr walnut, this elegant Canterbury displays a wonderful depth of colour and striking natural grain throughout. The rectangular frame is finely decorated with satinwood and boxwood stringing and surmounted by four beautifully turned finials. The Canterbury is divided into three generous compartments by elegantly shaped fret cut dividers, making it ideal for storing magazines, newspapers, sheet music or documents. Finely turned upright supports and delicately executed blind fretwork further enhance the sophisticated design.

Below is a single mahogany lined frieze drawer with a beautifully figured burr walnut front, retaining its original turned handles and providing useful additional storage.

The whole is raised on tall, slender turned legs, terminating in the original brass castors with white porcelain wheels, giving the piece an elegant and beautifully balanced appearance.

Made in England, circa 1850, this Canterbury remains in very good condition and is structurally sound, with firm joints throughout. Most importantly, it retains a wonderful sense of originality, with a superb warm patina and a rich, mellow colour that can only be achieved through generations of careful use and preservation.

Both decorative and practical, this superb Victorian Canterbury would sit equally well within a traditional period interior or as a distinctive statement piece in a more contemporary setting. A particularly elegant example of Victorian cabinetmaking, combining exceptional craftsmanship, functionality and a wonderful untouched character.
