18TH CENTURY GEORGE III PERIOD MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD, C1790

Imposing Fine Late 18th-Century George III Figured Mahogany Sideboard

An exceptional late 18th-century George III period figured mahogany sideboard, crafted in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, combining refined design with superb practical storage. The moulded, stepped platform top incorporates cleverly concealed sliding doors in the form of drawers, while the tambour doors in the superstructure glide open to reveal generous cupboards, flanked by striking, highly figured flamed mahogany panels. The base offers excellent functionality, with two shaped, oak-lined long drawers, a central oak-lined drawer, and two deep, bow-fronted oak-lined drawers, one fitted with a cellarette. Standing on six elegantly tapered, reeded mahogany legs, the piece has wonderful balance and presence.
The sideboard enjoys a glorious depth of colour and warm, glowing patina developed over more than two centuries. Its impressive proportions, sophisticated styling, and exceptional timber quality strongly indicate that it was originally made as a special commission.
Retaining its original keys and working locks, and remaining in largely untouched condition, this sideboard is sturdy, practical, and ready for everyday use. At the same time, it serves as a superb example of late Georgian craftsmanship and a striking focal point for any interior aiming to achieve an authentic English country house aesthetic.
