18TH CENTURY FRENCH WALNUT UPHOLSTERED ARMCHAIR, C1790

Charming 18th Century French Walnut Armchair
Newly Upholstered in Pierre Frey Fabric

A very fine 18th-century French armchair “à la Reine” in moulded and carved walnut, of elegant proportions and refined execution. The top of the backrest is richly carved with a central shell framed by scrolls above a lozenge motif, the shoulders adorned with delicate foliate scrolls. The armrests are finely carved with acanthus leaves and rest on shaped supports with further foliage decoration.
The serpentine apron is centred by a shell flanked by a garland of foliage, with additional shell motifs to the short sides. The armchair stands on four cabriole legs terminating in scrolls and acanthus leaves, united by a cross-stretcher centred with a carved flower. The frame is in excellent structural condition with no loose joints.
Recently reupholstered to a very high standard in a luxurious silk fabric by the renowned Maison Pierre Frey, with elegant foliate motifs, the chair combines period authenticity with contemporary comfort. It is finished with a loose, hand stitched, deep feather filled squab cushion, offering exceptional comfort. Seat height: 55 cm
An exquisite and highly decorative armchair, perfectly suited to both formal and contemporary interiors, and an excellent example of 18th century French craftsmanship enhanced by prestigious modern upholstery.
